We had a series of DDOS attacks hitting Blizzard, Microsoft, Sony, NCSoft, and others. Why? Because people are dicks is the best reasoning I can come up with. A couple of parties have claimed responsibility but it would appear Lizard Squad, a DDOS group of happy ne’er do wells, has been claiming responsibility. Not happy enough with corporate espionage they decided to double down and called in a threat against the plane that the president of Sony was flying on getting the FBI involved (they saw Corporate America’s hand and raised it one act of Domestic Terrorism). So… yup, they decided to piss off the FBI not smart.
Now, if that was all there was in the “some gamers suck” column that’d be kind of shitty but no, we then move on to the other bunch of sore sports who decided to throw a hissy fit to end all hissy fits and in a disturbingly increasingly common practice among FPShitheads called in a “SWATing” prank at a public school where pro-gamer Jordan Mathewson was streaming from (and owning them). Swat teams raided the room and reacted with the typical response one would expect from a SWAT team (loud and hard). It’s only a matter of time before a “SWATing” incident ends in death and is something that only proves that some gamers are twerps.
Now, you think “man, there’s some real scuz monkeys out there” and I would say yes but it gets worse. How is that possible one might say? Well three names Fish, Sarkeesian, and Quinn. Now this isn’t the start of a joke it’s not two game developers and a game critic walk in to a bar unless you end the joke by saying they get harassed to the point where they have to run and hide in fear because that’s kind of what happened. Quinn and Fish (who had already quit the industry and who’s only crime was supporting Quinn in that she should not be attacked) were doxxed by “big strong men” (aka little shits) because Quinn’s ex-boyfriend is a tool bag and hopefully is ashamed of himself. Sarkeesian’s crime on the other hand was that of having an opinion. She released another episode of Feminist Frequency discussing the objectification of women in gaming to which she was promptly attacked to the point of having to flee her house. Remember for a second, these same “upstanding” men are the same ones who were complaining their “opinions” were being “censored” over at Kotaku and other sites where they were harassing Quinn and her supporters. So apparently their opinions have to be heard, Sarkeesian’s are to be silenced at all costs even going so far to attack people like Joss Whedon and Tim Schafer. Yeah… fuck heads, I really don’t want to talk about this any more if you want to see my opinion on this see my editorial from Thursday.
One small piece of good news regarding sadly the least miserable of these incidents it would appear as of today Saturday the 30th the luminaries at Lizard Squad have been identified and at least two of them are in custody and have been doxed by a group identifying itself as Activist Revolution (great we got hacker on hacker violence here but at least it appears one group may be white hats). Now if only we could somehow lobotomize all the people who have been SWATing and making good people’s lives miserable it’d be a good week. (Oh and one question for Lizard Squad, seriously dude, you don’t put on a shirt when you talk to your friends on Skype?)
Pregnant with Possibilities: Who doesn’t like National Lampoon’s Vacation? You, there in the back who raised your hand, you are a monster without a soul and should now leave… I’m waiting… okay now that he’s gone here’s the good news incredible funny man Ed Helms will be taking up the role of Rusty (last played by Ethan Embry in Vegas Vacation which I didn’t even know existed). He will be joined by Charlie Day and Chris Hemsworth, Thor will be playing the husband of Rusty’s sister Audrey. This would lead me to suspect we’re going with one of the hot versions of Audrey not the awkward European Vacation version. One can only hope. While it would have nice if Johnny Galecki could have returned as Rusty given his Big Bang Comedy Clout I think Ed Helms is an excellent choice who will be able to channel some of that frustrated Every-Man that we all saw in Clark. Now my one question is will Day be playing one of Cousin Eddie’s kids? (My guess is yes.) (Source: Nerdist)
GaymerX may be back on: It would appear the previously deceased GaymerX convention is making a return with an unprecedented amount of industry support. They have launched a Kickstarter in an attempt to help stabilize funding and have refocused on a more “inclusive” experience (how it was un-inclusive before is beyond me but I think this is more just a reaction to the regular cadre of homophobes masquerading as people seeking “equality”). Close ever so close: Donald Glover made an appearance in a recent episode of Ultimate Spiderman, Donald who we may remember as Troy from Community or Childish Gambino rap star had famously auditioned for the role of Spider-man in Amazing Spider-man reboot and was sadly denied. Unfortunately the Ultimate Spider-Man Web Warriors Ultimate Spider-man: Web Warriors run and this just feels like a bit of a tease of how awesome he would have been. (Source: IO9)
Great as if Steam Sales weren’t enough: Razer, peripheral maker at large, is attempting to grow in to the Groupon of the Video Game world. Their new site Razer Cortex will hunt down and notify you of sales on titles by “product partners” allowing you to build wish lists and profiles based on game play. Now how this will fly, given some PC gamers refuse to use anything but Steam or are so afraid of DRM they’d smash their heads upon rocks before using Steam or Origin, only time will tell but a deal’s a deal am I right? In obvious news is obvious news: Lindsay Lohan is desperate for publicity according to Rockstar Games. My response is “yes and the sky’s blue anything else more obvious you want to state?” This is all in response to Lohan’s lawsuit insisting the Jonas character copies her “unique style” and “life experiences” so… you want yourself compared to a coked out sex fiend human train wreck Ms. Lohan? You may want to discuss this with your handlers. (Source Joystiq)
So you want to think you can dance: Kinect was recently removed from the Xbox console bringing the price down to a more palatable level. Microsoft has been mum on when the Kinect will be coming out as a standalone device, that is until this week when they announced a 150 dollar package including the new Harmonx Dance Central Spotlight will hit shelves for $150. Dance Central Spotlight a 10 dollar title launching this September will mean the hardware itself is going to go for $140 dollars. So when you eventually do buy this you’ll end up spending 50 dollars more than if you just got the bundle with it in the first place. (Source Ars Techinica)
GO Entertainment: Good Old Games is bringing DRM free movies and television to your computer starting now with 21 DRM free documentaries (al gaming themed) already on the service. (Source GOG)
THIS is why we needed a new Generation: Much has been said about how the new generation really doesn’t improve vastly over the graphics of the last generation. Aside from the fact we’re less than a year in to the new generation proper the graphics were not the issue but the vastness of space that we had to work with. In this article the folks over at Ubisoft Montreal discuss Assassin’s Creed Unity and scenes that will include upwards of 12,000 simultanious unique individuals on the screen! That’s a lot of begets and berets! In other AC news, Unity has been pushed back to November 11th which is only a couple of weeks but puts it day and date with Assassin’s Creed Rogue which may cannibalize the sales of both titles and may not be a prudent move.
Platform Im-Parity: Console exclusives are something of a norm in the industry now (with PC users never sure what if any of the perks they’ll get). A list of Playstation Exclusive content was recently announced for the highly anticipated Destiny launching in just over two weeks. Squee! These exclusives are all timed and will come to all other platforms over the next year including two weapons, a cooperative mode set on Mars and some gear sets. All in all it sounds like a bunch of gear that you’ll not use for long and missions that are nice but not needed for the story but that hasn’t stopped us from buying early in the past (or me for buying three copies… yeah I have a problem). That being said, not everything is exclusive, this week pre-orders launched for Digital purchase editions of Destiny on the Xbox One so if you don’t need a box and only want the digital treats you can pre-order now from the Xbox Store (which comes with some added bonus gear and the joy of being able to wake up on the morning of launch and play without having to leave your house). Thank god it’s not Depp: It would appear that Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play Doctor Strange which is a far better option than the oft discussed Depp Strange that simply put would have sucked. Phoenix is an amazing actor with some great range who is at times chameleon like in his performances. His ability to play a “broken” character would be perfect for Strange and seeing him portrayed as someone similar to his role as Freddie from 2012’s The Master would be amazing! (Source Nerdist)
They keep on rolling: Another patch has dropped for public consumption over at Microsoft for the Xbox One, this one brings new Xbox SmartGlass features as well as improvements to the party app and the Media Player preview. The Media Player only works with USB attached media at this time but an update that will include DLNA functionality is to follow shortly. (Source Microsoft, Joystiq)
SKU a little to the left: Nintendo are the kings of new bundles and reworking hardware. 3DS owners who desired a second stick and didn’t want to buy a funky attachment can now get the new 3DSL which comes with a second stick as well as new shoulder buttons as well as some reworking of innards giving the platform a bit more oomph so far no North American launch has been announced but it should drop on October 11th in Japan. Now North Americans don’t despair now that the big titles are starting to drop for the Wii U Nintendo are releasing two new Wii U bundles in hopes to draw more players in to their fold. A Super Mario World 3D and Mario Kart 8 bundle will drop sometime this month (Nintendo as always are vague) clocking in at $299.99 while supplies last. If you are desperate for your Plumbing Adventure Simulator Software you now can get your hands on it. (Source: Polygon, Joystiq)
In Frame: Indie developer Nicky Case driven by recent events in Ferguson has started developing a title to address the framing of violence by the media and how it can influence public opinion. Based around simple gameplay masking a complex message similar to critical darling Papers Please the title will put you in the position of a reporter and show how your actions impact news as it unfolds. Flash Back Type-0: Remember when we would get Final Fantasy games years after they were released in Japan? Well those days are back, Square Enix announced they will be bringing the 2011 title Final Fantasy Type-0 to North American shores this week at PAX. No date was mentioned so expect it in 5 to 10 years. (Source: Joystiq)
