Could have been worse I guess: It’s kind of a sorry state of affairs when we have to say “only one instance of doxxing that’s an improvement”. Felicia Day is the ever present figure nerd culture, she worked with Joss Whedon , had a vastly successful web series about MMO fans, starred in musicals next to Nathan Fillion and Neil Patrick Harris and started her own successful web network Geek & Sundry. She’s been pretty quiet on the entire Gamer Gate situation and for good reason. She was afraid of getting doxxed. This week she didn’t cast judgment or choose sides, she just discussed her fear of someone disclosing her information. She has a history with stalkers and people showing up at her house which is why she’s remained silent and said:
I have had stalkers and restraining orders issued in the past, I have had people show up on my doorstep when my personal information was HARD to get. To have my location revealed to the world would give a entry point for a few mentally ill people who have fixated on me, and allow them to show up and make good on the kind of threats I've received that make me paranoid to walk around a convention alone. I haven't been able to stomach the risk of being afraid to get out of my car in my own driveway because I've expressed an opinion that someone on the internet didn't agree with.
HOW SICK IS THAT?
I have allowed a handful of anonymous people censor me. They have forced me, out of fear, into seeing myself a potential victim.
And that makes me loathe not THEM, but MYSELF.
At least this week I got a new hero Chris Kluwe and my respect for Felicia Day grew. Accentuate the positive folks. (Source Kotaku, Gawker, Medium, and Twitter)
Seriously people GTA V has no beta: Look, we’re big boys and girls here, if someone sends you an invitation to a random beta check that it’s legitimate before clicking on it. Rockstar NEVER beta their games publicly and yet it would appear people are still accepting the beta invites for GTA V, if you did that your compromised accounts are on your head. (Source Polygon)
Okay kind of sick (apply as desired): Sunset Overdrive drops this Tuesday and as such they have released the traditional Launch Trailer and it’s pretty… graphic. (Source Gamespot)
Speculative Fiction: Specs have been released for the PC versions of the upcoming big titles Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Assassin’s Creed Unity both of these require pretty beefy machines. (Source VG24/7 here and here)
Someday Maybe: In a discussion with Forbes regarding Harmonix’s new title Fantasia it would appear that they still want to do more Rock Band and there is hope for a Rock Band 4. In other news when the hell did Forbes become such a source for gaming news?! (Source Forbes)
Because you couldn’t get enough: It would appear Hearthstone will be everywhere soon enough. The game is coming to Android and Apple phones in the new year and appears to be the game to unseat Angry Birds in the “on every single device including your toaster” category. (Source Joystiq
Come on down to Jack Skellington’s Video Game Scareporium: Do you have a PSN account? Do you like peeing your pants? If so check out the Sale of the Dead on the Playstation Network. You can get spooky games for as low as four dollars with titles like Dead Space 2, Dead Nation Apocalypse Edition and more! (Source Joystiq)
If that didn’t scare you: DLC for Alien Isolation drops next week, called Corporate Lockdown this is a parallel story to Amanda’s focusing on a Seegson executive named Ransome. (Source Joystiq)
Delicious: Halo Master Chief Collection drops shortly and with that comes the trailers including this 1080p Halo 3 footage. For Halo fans this is pretty sweet. (Source IGN)
But will they cry with their therapist whilst buying art: Apparently Metallica hasn’t annoyed people with their incredibly rich antics (or at least not as much as U2 have after that free album debacle). Blizzard in an attempt to seem “cool to the kids” will have them play Blizzcon 2014. Given the drop in subscription numbers my only guess is they are hoping to bring in the Metallica fans to fill out the auditorium. (Source Massively)
This should be self-explanatory: So, the game Paranautical Activity left early access last weekend, apparently the CEO of Code Avarice (its developer) didn’t clear his cache causing it to appear as if it was still in early release. Mental note, if a developer isn’t smart enough to clear their cache they probably aren’t very good at their job. Anyhow they released the update on an off day which is why NO ONE releases on weekends in case there’s a technical glitch except no support but he didn’t seem to get that memo so he apparently decided how to get resolution was by issuing death threats against Gabe Newell the owner of Valve.
He was a little bummed when they decided to remove his game and never do business with his company ever again. Interestingly they won’t remove hate groups from Steam or take a stand on people issuing threats against others but they will remove people who threaten their owner within hours. The CEO sold his half of the company and gave up his share of the game (in hopes to mend bridges probably at the behest of the other people he worked with who are now basically screwed due to his need for anger management) but as of yet has not made it back on to the marketplace. Said CEO probably also destroyed his future chances of employment (and possibly those associated with him) by saying “If I do continue to work in games it'll be as an anonymous 1 of 1000 at some shitty corporation, not the most public figure of a single digit sized team.” Seriously, does he want a hand with that hole he’s digging himself? Mech Horde Mode… that sounds delightful: In its effort to continue building on the title Respawn’s latest DLC will be a four player co-op mode called Frontier Defense where you fight off waves of enemies. Still no more story, no single player and no new Titan types but this is something. (Source Polygon)
In Cool Stuff News: Apparently the Guardians of the Galaxy sound track is so popular and hipsters are so retro it’s actually being released in cassette form. So, here’s the perfect gift for all your dead media loving knick-knack obsessed nerd friends… by that I mean I want one in my stocking! (Source Polygon)
Some IPs just can’t die: In an apparent attempt to maximize their IP purchase (and entirely fill the viewing calendar of geeks for the next 5 years) Warner Brothers is apparently looking to create a new Live Action series of Mortal Kombat. Set to show a “new generation” this may be to tie in with the latest installment because, you know, the nerds love them the Next Generationstuff! (Source Joystiq)
Ridley Scott+Sci-fi=Nerdgasm: The official trailer for Halo Nightfall has been released and looks amazing! Here’s hoping this lives up to its hype and the fact you get to see the actual ring is a Halo fan’s delight. Also, was that Flood?!(Source Microsoft)
