Dialing it down a Notch: Notch indie game darling turned gazillionaire has backed off his hard "well we'll never work with them now" stance regarding Oculus/Facebook getting their own Minecraft version and is now waving his hands and trying to distract you from the fact he kind of over reacted a bit and now realizes "hey, there's this potential for like another gazillion dollars here... maybe I should calm down a bit since I don't really know it's bad yet." (Source Notch)
Unity... it's not just an Assassin's Creed game: The Unity engine is giving away copies of it's programming interface to all ID@Xbox developers free of charge. With some fairly highly anticipated titles already expected to be dropping soon using the platform (Ori and the Blind Forest, Cuphead, and Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime) this may be helpful in their getting a larger portion of the market at least among indie developers who now have inexpensive access to Unreal and Crytek engines. Roll Saving Throw for Saturation Save: Paizo has licensed out its Pathfinder IP to a second company, the successful Kickstarter campaign for Pathfinder Online (that actually had two campaigns one for a tech demo and a second for the actual end product) will remain with Goblin Works an all star development team made up of some pretty impressive luminaries in the gaming industry with ties to WotC, TSR, Whitewolf, and more. Obsidian the developer of some of the best almost finished RPGs in gaming history also picked up the license to produce games set in the Pathfinder universe. Let's hope these don't require mods to finish the quest chains. (Source Joystiq)
What do you mean sexually suggestive?
(Also, that Dana Plato thing was a real tragedy!)
Oh and Nintendo you let us down bro: In bitter grudge news Tom Zito took to his Night Trap kickstarter to renew old grudges discussing how Nintendo threw him and his fellow Night Trap developers to the wolves to save themselves from the "Video Games Are Evil" wave that hit the mid-nineties. In a pure fit of pique he actually applied for a license for a DS title and said that he would be bringing the title to the platform as a great big FU... yeah, giving a company money is not generally seen as a "FU". Also I'm sure it wasn't the fact you had Dana Plato running around in her underthings that made your game look a little sketch now is it Tom? (Source Polygon)
Ubi are serious about being serious: Having caught some substantial flack for their initial explanation of the lack of female playable characters in Assassin's Creed Unity they took the opportunity this week to discuss how "serious" they were about Élise and her addition to the Assassin's Creed universe saying that a real mature love story is something they wanted to do for a long time. Given the nuanced portrayal of a failed marriage in Black Flag, the poignant and sad tone that much of Ezio's life took after losing his first real love, and even Altair's complex history (though that was mostly told in cut scenes) I'm sure they may want to check with their own games before saying it's something that's not been done before. NO: In other Blizzard news Blizzard also this week discussed how Microsoft refused to certify Diablo III for Xbox One until they were able to get it running at 1080p. Given that the game ran at 1080p on my old PC build with half the spec of an Xbox One this says more about Blizzard than it does about Microsoft. (Source CVG)
In Mankind should be purged from the face of earth news: Kim Kardashian's Kim Kardashian: Hollywood touch farming game is on schedule to make 200 million dollars. Yes, the click farming vodka shilling and low self esteem simulator is one of the top grossing apps in history and due to her title as a co-designer Kim will get about 80 million dollars. That terrible feeling you just heard felt self respecting game designers around the world crying out in terror and being suddenly silenced by Yeezus telling them how much of a genius his wife is. Trailers Trailers Trailers: A few interesting new trailers hit the scene first we have Enemy Starfighter a cool mashup of Wing Commander and Homeworld gameplay and visuals.
Next we have a neat little cinematic video from the folks over at RSI discussing Star Citizen with a bit of a 2001 twist making its way out of Gamescom (and oh yeah they hit 50 million in funding).
And in "how much did you like those pants anyway" news we have previews of The Evil Within (a full hour of gameplay) and Alien Isolation (sadly only about 8 minutes), if you have a heart condition or are of weak temperament turn away now.
And here's 36 minutes of gameplay from The Witcher 3 to keep your heart rate up.
Now to take it down a notch I give you Claptrap (this one's for you Ken and Sarah)
Now you can get your AMAs with voice commands: Reddit comes to Xbox One this week with the new Xredd application. The Xbox One has been trying to differentiate itself by showing flexibility and this is the start to new applications showing that off. (Source Joystiq)
Holy crap it really is full of stars: Spacesim Roguelike No Man's Sky discussed the size of the universe. Moving from a 32-bit to 64-bit planet seed generator they've estimated the time to see every planet in the universe is clocking in somewhere around 5 billion years. In other news, Skynet will come online next week let's hope that turns out okay. (Source Joystiq)
Why we can't have nice things: I love gaming, it's pretty obvious because I started this website but an article over at Polygon touches on why we as a community so seldom have nice things driving out good folks around the industry due to the ease that internet anonymity has given us. Fans claim the Doctors over at Bioware were driven out by EA, in this article Zeschuck pretty much straight up says "no it was you guys" pointing at the "fans" and their incessant death threats, rape threats, and general douche-baggery. Once again, this is why we can't have nice things. (Source Polygon)
He's just not that in to you: Ubi distanced itself further from the Wii U console indicating it will no longer be developing "adult" titles for the platform after the delayed Watch_dogs hits goodness knows when. They will still work with the console bringing family friendly titles (so Just Dance for everyone) but that's it. (Source Joystiq)
Really, we're good: Crytek attempt to reassure gamers after restructuring and selling off a large number of properties that they are reorganizing due to a difficult market and will reassure players by releasing awesome games. That may be hard when the IPs they bought are being sold off but time will tell if this once promising development engine can prove its worth and shake the Unreal Engine's firm grasp on the market. No better way: Oderus Urungus was laid to rest with a viking funeral at the recent Gwar-B-Q. His alter ego Dave Brockie had been laid to rest back in April but his costume saw a fitting tribute to the awesome that he brought us for many years. RIP Oderus I'm sure you are kicking the ass of giant space vagina monsters in another dimension as we read this. (Source Nerdist)
Movie Madness: In movie news, Kevin Smith is releasing his second True North Trilogy entry called Yoga Hosers (the first being Tusk a yet to be released horror/comedy film starring Haley Joel Osmet, Justin Long, Johnny Depp, Génesis Rodríguez and Michael Parks set in Manitoba set to debut at TIFF 2014). Yoga Hosers will star his own daughter Harley Quinn Smith (best daughter name ever) along side Johnny Depp's daughter Lily Rose Depp (as well as Depp himself). Their daughters will be Yoga junkies who use their Yoga Super Powers to fight an "ancient evil". A girl-centred Super Hero movie it will use the trade mark Kevin Smith comedy and is hoping to show some strong female characters in a new setting in a medium where they are traditionally under serviced. While I appreciate the work he's bringing to Canada and how much he loves the country as well as his attempt to bring strong female super heroes to the screen as something other than a second fiddle (let's admit it, Black Widow is a second fiddle to Cap regardless of how we package it) I've not heard the word Hosers since Bob and Doug were in regular circulation on TV and even then I never met anyone who actually used it, it was more of an ironic thing. I appreciate the Smith Love but I have to say some times it's like he views us in the same Degrassi inspired caricature form that Michael Moore did with Canadian Bacon.
How did I not know about this: This trailer for Automata is available on Youtube this week and god damn is it amazing. It's like Blade Runner set in a more realistic contemporary setting and I just peed my pants a little watching it again.
