This has been a busy week with Gamescom in Cologne Germany we’ve seen a lot of announcements from pretty much everyone and their brother’s game company. Add to that the 40th anniversary of D&D and Gencon 2014 and we’re talking a big week for the geek. As such there are probably a LOT of stories we’re missing but these are a few that caught our eye.

Star Citizens get more things to do:

New gameplay modes and features have been unlocked in the perennial crowd sourcing favourite Star Citizen. This week saw the launch of Capture The Core a team based capture the flay mode running 20 minutes or until the first team captures the core 5 times. Time to flip the helmet and get out in the black!

Night Trap News:

When a person says to you the words Night Trap one of two things will happen, if you were born after 1985 you will ask if that person forgot their medication and look around the room to confirm the fastest path to all the exists and if you were born before 1985 you will turn to the person saying Night Trap and say “I know what the hell was that about?!” Not the first FMV but the most infamous it looks like a move to remake Night Trap is on over at Kickstarter.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U:

We are now at over 1,160 days since the game was announced it looks like this “killer app” may get pushed back again with no release date based on past trends it’s looking like this title won’t see the light of day until 2015. Ars Technica broke it down in detail compiling the statistics, that being said you never know with Nintendo.

EA Access goes live:

If you need your FIFA fix and you have an Xbox One the time is right to pick up EA Access, at 30 dollars a year and 10% discounts on DLC and purchases it may be the right way to stock up your Xbox One game library on the cheap.

The King Is Dead, Long Live The King… or his Quest at least:

Surprising news out of Germany from Activision, the long dead Sierra line has been reborn and a site has gone up advertising their rebirth. Apparently they are being rebuilt as Activision’s indie brand, this comes with some good and bad. The good a new Geometry Wars will be coming shortly and a new Kings Quest from The Odd Gentlemen who brought us the Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. The bad news is Telltale is out of the King’s Quest business losing the license, with all the awesome of Fables, Walking Dead, their upcoming Borderlands title and everything else on their plate Telltale are probably a bit relieved.

Halo, Halo and MORE Halo:

Microsoft held their big Gamescom show and several press events where they dumped a LOT of Halo data on our heads starting with a beta date of December 27th to January 17th. We now know what everyone will be doing around their Holidays this year. Additionally, they dumped some data on the Halo Master Chief Collection’s skills based multiplayer and a new Halo Channel for Xbox One (think basically Halo Waypoint for the Xbox One with lots of dedicated Twitch streaming and exclusive events.

Quantum Break from reality:

The new Quantum Break gameplay footage released a sweet little gameplay video and discussed their upcoming game in more detail.

Tomb Raider sealed in:

Tomb Raider has limited exclusivity on the Xbox One console, so if you are going to want to check out the second portion of this reboot franchise right away you will have to make sure you have an Xbox One for Holiday 2015 (if you are patient it will be coming to other platforms later, how far later is unknown).

DLNA incoming:

The new system update is available for Xbox One users on the Preview Membership program unlocking features like updated parties, friends and most anticipated DLNA access. Unfortunately the program is invite only but for those on it, they can now enjoy some neat new features!

Share like never before:

Virtual couch co-op and controller passing is coming to the Sony Playstation 4 with Update 2.0, the neat thing is with this update you will be able to let a friend take control of your game over the internet even if they don’t own the game you are playing. This is one of those “Future is now” moments folks.

Sometimes it’s good to be bad:

Because Sarah and Ken will basically be disappearing for several weeks down their rabbit hole of cannibal mutant little people when this comes out I whet their appetite now with this Borderlands Pre-Sequel trailer.

DOMINATION:

Sony is owning this generation with over 10 million consoles sold in around nine months from launch, still early it is hard to know if Microsoft will be able to close this gap (at around half the number of units sold) but time will tell.

Doctor Whaaa:

The University of Aberdeen used computers to find the average face of the Doctor. Why is this relevant? Because it’s Doctor Who and I like Doctor Who and well… SCIENCE!

Because we comment on rampant speculation:

A teaser was shown from the latest Silent Hill tailer which seems to imply Guillermo Del Toro is going to be involved in a new Silent Hill video game.  I’ll let you go change your pants now.

Bioware has a new beat:

The viral marketing is apparently paying off with the announcement of Shadow Realms, an interesting new property from Bioware. The gist is, you are either one of a co-op group of super powered beings or an omni-potent Game Master trying to kill them. Think of a live action D&D session where the DM controls computerized minions and the gamers control basically the cast of Heroes. This sounds intriguing to say the least.

Beware the creepy four armed bitey guys:

Bioware have released the official trailer for Dragon Age: Inquisition (or at least their latest official trailer).

Yeah but can I drown them in a swimming pool:

The Sims 4 drops in a matter of weeks and for those unable to wait a “Create A Sim” demo has dropped where you can pre-model your pretend you so you can launch right in to your fake house with your fake girlfriend or boyfriend and your fake job when the game launches and you may find yourself in a beautiful house with a beautiful wife and you may ask yourself well… how did I get here? Oh yeah, the Sims.

Wow WoW:

Blizzard took the time to not only release their cinematic trailer for their new Warlords of Draenor expansion but they have also dated the release date of November 13th and let us know more about their collector’s editions (which are always a treat). I never really glommed on to WoW but every expansion I came back to check it out. I thought this time it would be different but after this trailer my pocket book is practically ejecting money at the screen in order to get me to buy it.

Alienware beams down the Alpha:

Originally intended as a Steam Machine Alienware plow forward with the release of their Alpha living room PC. Unfortunately Steam have postponed the release of both the Valve OS to OEMs as well as revised (multiple times) the design of their controller delaying release. Unable to hold back Alienware have pushed forward using a hybrid shell overtop a Windows operating system with the option to launch straight in to Steam. How this will compare to other options is yet to be seen but an option for folks who may not want to fiddle with their own thin client options.

Assassin’s Creed Unity:

Damn, the French really are sexy! Arno shows off his jumping around skills and we get to see a bit more of the beautiful city of Paris in this Gamescom footage from Ubisoft as well they shared with us some gameplay to see Arno strut his stuff.

Source: Polygon

Going Rogue Palin style:

Ubisoft also took the time to show us a little bit of Assassin’s Creed Rogue (their other Assassin’s Creed) in action. This at least answers the question about Haytham (though if this is in the Seven Years' War that dude is OLD come AC III).

Sega Flinches when the Alien bites:

Sega has offered to settle the class action suit tied to Aliens: Colonial Marines offering 1.25 million US to get their face away from the facehugger pod. Gearbox continue to move to be removed from the suit declaring it was still all on Sega they were just the contractors.

Destiny gets dusty:

Bungie released a new trailer for Destiny featuring the red hills of Mars. I’m guessing the Teraforming didn’t get very far before they got kicked back to the first city but their spoiled splendour looks pretty awesome!

I’m sure we missed stuff so here’s links to every story covered by Polygon regarding Sony’s and Microsoft’s announcements at Gamescom.

Well… at least it isn’t Mountain Dew:

The use of soda for marketing to gamers continues, if you are an avid League of Legends collector this may be for you (at least if you live in South Korea).

See that kids, Han did shoot first:

The dream of many an old school fan, myself included, comes true (maybe). A re-release of digitally restored Star Wars original trilogy is coming at us in 2015 in the lead up to the new Episode VII. There is some serious damage to many of the negatives (which may be why so much was digitally scrubbed) but fingers crossed this is happening and I can make my niece watch Han gun down a guy in a cantina in cold freaking blood like the stone cold killer that dude always was. I mean who goes to their probable death with a beautiful young Carrie Fisher proclaiming their love for them and simply replies “I know”? A bad-ass cold as ice Nerf Herder that’s who!

Who’s next:

Whovians will be interested ot know the departure of Jenna-Louise Coleman is coming sooner than expected having announced she will not be renewing her contract after this year’s Christmas special. No details are released as to why she is leaving (they never are it took a secret recording and many years to find out the reasons behind Eccleston’s departure and even that is full of conjecture) but this doesn’t come as an entire shock. Her character was always a transitional one from the post Pond depression in to the end of times and in to the beginning of a new cycle. Remembering that his first companions didn’t last too long with him during the show a pair of teachers for the first season together makes sense. Now let’s see if his next set are a pair of plucky teenagers.

EPIC VIDEO IS EPIC:

I don’t play sports, I don’t like sports, I haven’t played a sport video game since the Intellivision but this ad makes me want to play Madden NFL 15 real REAL bad. (Or at least make sure I never challenge Kevin Hart to anything.) Also, this Franco has range!

Community gets an epic trailer:

Well, we’re on to season six and it has an epic trailer… so the movie is next?

Good by Robin and thanks for the laughs:

In closing we take a moment to acknowledge this week’s passing of a comedy legend and someone who had a big part in our childhoods Robin Williams. An avid gamer who loved Nintendo, World of Warcraft and Call of Duty but most of all a father and entertainer who brought all he touched a lot of joy, he will be missed. I have nothing more that can be added beyond the outpouring of grief and sadness that has already seen communities like the WoW community calling for and getting a tribute placed in game to Robin and the petition to get Nintendo to add a tribute to Robin in their upcoming Zelda title (a game he loved so much he named his daughter after it) which has seen less luck. If something good can come from this it is hopefully this will raise the profile of chronic depression and help some one else seek help. If you or anyone you know has chronic depression please know there are people and resources available to you.

Depression Hurts
