Fasten your seatbelts, put away your tray and put your chair in the upright position ‘cause it’s time for another exciting adventure of our dear pal Jackie Estacado and The Darkness. This little beauty was release by those rascals at 2K on February 7, 2012 and I gotta say if you First Person Old Style shooters then plunk this sucker in already!
local estranged occultist Johnny Powell. Let’s just say ol’ Johnny is a few apples short of a bushel and has fled the scene leaving Jackie alone to deal with his terrible guilt at not being able to save his sweetie Jenny.
There is a secret society that is interested in Jackie and they tend to be rather aggressive in their methods, which is just fine for a dual gun wielding morose demon infected fellow that Jackie is. The Darkness comes out again to play, with a cheeky Darkling as your guide and it’s time to get your hands bloody in another adventure.
There are some significant improvements in this game from the last one. The game actually encourages you to find new combos for dispatching your foes with the “Flair” and rewards your efforts with sometimes as much as 3 times the usual experience. The story takes neat twists and turns so you get a real sense what it’s like for Jackie. I am not going to pull any punches and it’s shorter than the original but the fluid controls and comic book violence make it very enjoyable game. I even enjoyed the co-op multiplayer Vendettas, you get to choose 3 different types of character classes and the action run parallel with the game’s storyline. Up to four players can work together and take on the enemies each with their unique skill and very amusing dialogue.
It’s a good reminder that games although short can still be fun. If you don’t take any expectations into this one, I think that you will be pleasantly surprised. It’s also kinda fun to play the “bad” guy that is anti-hero than some upstanding white suited crusader of justice. Plus you can pick it up without breaking the bank...what do you have to lose?? I think Sheila sums it up in Army of Darkness - “I may be bad, but I feel... good!!!”
- Solid action
- Great Dialogue
- Bit short
