Set in the year 2183, only 35 years after the discovery of the Mass Effect relays, you, Commander Shepard, have become the first human Spector and must embark on a mission to save the galaxy from a rogue Spector, Saren! Is the enemy who you believe it is or is there more to this evil than meets the eye? You can't do it alone, gather some comrades of varying species and explore the galaxy on a quest of salvation!
This series has a morality metre. You can play as a goody two-shoes and become a Paragon or you can play fast and loose, giving you Renegade. There isn't a lot of incentive to play an in between character because both high Paragon and Renegade scores open new dialogue options and do effect the outcome of the story. Without going to an extreme, you will be missing out.
Along with choosing your gender, you are giving the option of six classes: Soldier, Engineer, Adept, Infiltrator, Sentinel, and Vanguard. The classes allow for differing play styles. I like hitting things hard, I played the Solider a lot. If you carry your character over to the other games, you are able to use the same class with some special abilities unlocked.
Taking from the RPG setting, you gain levels and are able to unlock abilities of your choice. As you begin to specialise, more options will become available to your character. There is a Max level cap of 60 but I only reached that after importing my previous cleared game for a NG+ feel.
You explore the galaxy in the USS Normandy. You can travel between systems at ease. You also control a ground vehicle, the Mako, to explore the majority of planets. You interact and learn about different races as well as long dead ones, the Protheans.
A friend bought me ME2 for my birthday, along with a few other games. I was wary at first because of my distain for the first. Eventually I played through all my games and only ME2 was left. I'd either have to get up and go outside to buy a new game or I could stay in my PJs and play ME2. I am happy to report that laziness won out and my heart was stolen. I played ME2 through twice and realised that I needed more. I popped ME1 back into my 360 determined to see the characters I'd grown to love again and in a new way.
To me Mass Effect 1 will always be the weakest of the trilogy but it was needed. It laid the groundwork for this series. It allowed a legend to grow from a well-known solider to a hero, no matter the moral path taken. It gave us a based to meet the characters and like them or dislike them. It wove lore spread over countless species. It created a universe that was our own and because of that it gave us the will to fight to keep it alive.
Despite my unending love for this series and the characters, I can still say I hate the Mako. I despise the Mako. The opening Citadel part is tedious. As in most games, the morality choices are too black and white. Some of the achievements are extremely tedious to unlock, requiring at least three playthroughs. And I will always be a little sad there wasn't a Krogan romance option. Don't get me wrong, I'll always be Mrs. Garrus Vakarian in my heart, but I'd have liked the option to Klingon-style woo Wrex.
This is just my opinion of the game. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and feelings. But if you liked this, stay tuned for Part 2! I'm sure I'll fan-girl super hard.
