Developed by Funcom and published by Aspyr and Empires Interactive, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey was released in 2006 for both Windows and Xbox. It differs from the point-and-click adventure of the first game, Dreamfall is an action game. This game incorporates action adventure with some stealth elements and problem solving.
After rushing out of the house, learning her father is going off for a work trip, Zoë runs into her best friend Olivia DeMarco. Olivia invites Zoë into her electronics shop. While talking to Olivia, Zoë witnesses a weird video on TV of a young girl telling her to "find her" "save her".
After this, we get a combat tutorial at the gym, a mechanic not employed in The Longest Journey. Leaving the gym, Zoë gets a call from her ex-boyfriend, Reza Temiz. Reza is an investigative journalist known as Jericho. He asks Zoë to pick up a package for him for a story he is working on. He is very vague but she agrees to help him out.
You go to see Helena Chang and here is where your adventure begins! There is a strange woman holding Chang hostage. After either fighting or tricking your way to Helena, she gives you the package for Reza, after some convincing. You return to Reza's apartment but he's missing. You get arrested by Eye Commandos and spend the night in jail!
Zoë is a dreamer. She can dream herself between Stark and Arcadia, being in both places at once. There are so few dreamers, most people in Arcadia do not believe they exist. This also helps her discover the origins of the girl in the TV as well as protects her from the dreamer.
During your time playing Dreamfall, you actually play as three different characters. Zoë is the main story line but you also play as April Ryan. She has lost her ability to shift and is leading a rebel army in Mercuria against the Azadi. April leads the to the best of her ability while also trying to discover if her story is linked with Zoë's. She travels to the Dark City and even the Guardian's realm. You also play as a new character, Kian Alvane. Alvane is an Azadi Apostle. He is sent to Mercuia to dispose of "The Scorpion" (spoiler, it's April!).
This game is great! To me, it isn't as good as the first game. Yes, there is a really cool expansion of The Longest Journey lore and setting. Yes, there is a graphical upgrade. All of that is awesome. The first game was a point-and-click adventure, with an emphasis on adventure. Dreamfall is definitely an adventure but far more action oriented. While that isn't really a bad thing, the first game was a call back to all the things I ADORED in games as a kid. A point-and-click adventure that the 11 year old in me would die for. So it is not that this game is bad in anyway, I was simply spoiled with the first game.
Though this game is very action oriented, it does give you the ability to avoid fighting. You can use stealth or your mind to find ways through various situations in the game. I hated fighting, probably because I sucked at it.
The game ends on a cliffhanger. Zoë is in a coma. April and Reza are possibly dead. Alvane is an outcast from the Azadi. There is a traitor in April's ranks. Someone is hunting down the Kin. Which is awesome and horrible. Released in 2006, the new game is set to drop November 2014. That is a long wait.
The third instalment is set to drop next month and I for one am so excited to find out what happened to April! As I said in the last review, this game and the first are easy to get. Both are available on Steam and GOG as a set or individually. Try them out! Do itttttttt! The internet told you too.
