A run and gun shooter class of game, the premise is pretty simple, zombies, as well as vampires, werewolves, swamp monsters, evil fungi, aliens, and giant fucking babies, have invaded your neighbourhood, and surrounding area which seems to include swamps and even medieval castles containing ancient evils, and you must save your neighbours! As well as some tourists. Collect neighbours from the evils attacking them to earn points and move onto the next level.
Zombies let your choose from a male or female character, Zeke and Julie. All you have to do is hit the D-pad right or left to switch between them. The characters play identically. It just depends if you want to be a boy or girl or if you base your decision on the colour of the character's squirt gun, which was my method of character selection (red over blue)! It also has one of the most seamless co-op modes that I am shocked it is still an issue with modern games.
I was the only kid I knew with this game. My cousins, despite my parents buying them a copy, thought it was stupid and never played it. I played the shit out of this game! It has zombies, sick beats, especially the levels with werewolves, and awesome items/weapons. What is not to love about killing zombies with a squirt gun!
As I noted above, pretty simple game premise: rescue as many people as you can. The enemies will kill people if you cannot get to the quickly enough. Different enemies are weak to a variety of items and weapons. Some enemies cannot really be killed and your only real option is destroying walls and hedges to escape their wrath.
The difficulty scales pretty quickly. Bosses are inventive and incredibly fun but also frustrating. The giant baby boss comes to mind. Damn baby is hilarious and frustrating!
The soundtrack is awesome and will get stuck in your head. The environment and enemies pay homage to classic horror movie settings and characters. They are wonderfully rendered.
This game truly is my holiday favourite. Recently this game has gained more attention and a cult following, for good reason. If you like classic horror movies and characters or 16 bit games, check it out!
